A powerful way to release emotions
Aug 17, 2025Clearing Emotions
It can be hugely challenging when strong emotions arise. Maybe we are going through difficult life events, maybe old memories are being triggered, or maybe it’s both. In other newsletters, we have explored the importance of facing and understanding old feelings. In this series of 3 newsletters, we will focus on practical tools to help us release them forever.
1. Move
The chemicals of our feelings need to be cleared, otherwise they get stored in the body causing other problems. Candice Pert discovered how these neuropeptides sit in our cell receptors indefinitely, unless we process these ‘molecules of emotion.’
The first thing to do when upset is to move. This helps the body shift the molecules through the system and out. I always suggest a big glass of water as part of this ‘feeling flush.’
Any movement can be helpful in this physical clearing:
- Walking
- Jogging, running
- Swimming
- Stretching
- Shaking
- Rebounding, trampoline
- Gym session
- Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi
Keep breathing consciously through your movement. When used with focus, our breath deepens the process and turbocharges our release.
Try adding sound too, if you have the privacy to go for it. Get on all fours and growl like an animal, moving your body however feels good. Crying, yelling, screaming can all be part of a cathartic release.
I like to put a 10 minute timer on strong release work. This helps contain what can feel overwhelming.
Remember to look after yourself whatever you do. Strong emotion can drive strong behaviour so always be mindful of your physical safety, and the experience of others around you.
