What Is Hypnosis? Understanding Hypnotherapy for Healing and Personal Growth

Mar 17, 2026

Many people are curious about hypnosis — but also a little nervous about it.

Questions often come up like:

  • Will I lose control?

  • Will I become unconscious?

  • Could hypnosis bring up something overwhelming?

  • What if I can’t be hypnotised?

These concerns are very common, especially for people exploring hypnotherapy for the first time.

In reality, therapeutic hypnosis is very different from the hypnosis you may have seen on stage or in entertainment. In this article, I want to explain what hypnosis actually is, what it isn’t, and why it can be such a powerful tool for healing.

Hypnosis vs Stage Hypnosis

When most people think of hypnosis, they imagine stage performances where people forget their name or act like a chicken.

That kind of hypnosis is designed purely for entertainment.

Stage hypnotists are highly skilled at identifying the most suggestible people in an audience. They run simple tests to find individuals who can easily enter a trance state and follow suggestions quickly.

Those people are then invited on stage.

But the intention there is completely different from therapeutic hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is not about entertainment.
It’s about healing.

In hypnotherapy, you remain conscious, aware, and in control the entire time. There is no loss of awareness and no surrendering control to the therapist.

Instead, hypnosis simply helps you move your awareness inward so you can access deeper parts of your mind.

How Hypnotherapy Works

Normally, our minds operate in what’s known as the beta brainwave state. This is our everyday waking state where the mind is active, analytical, and often quite busy.

Hypnosis gently shifts awareness into a different brainwave state known as alpha.

Alpha is a more relaxed and inward state of consciousness. It’s the same state many people enter during meditation or deep relaxation.

When we access this level of mind, something interesting happens:

We can begin to reconnect with deeper memories, emotions, beliefs, and experiences that influence our current behaviour and wellbeing.

Most of the emotional patterns we struggle with today have roots earlier in life — often in childhood experiences that left unresolved emotional residue.

Hypnotherapy allows us to access those deeper layers of the mind safely and consciously.

Addressing a Common Myth: “I Can’t Be Hypnotised”

Another thing people often say is:

“I’ve tried hypnosis before and it didn’t work.”

In many cases, this simply means the person expected hypnosis to feel like being unconscious or completely “under”.

But therapeutic hypnosis doesn’t work like that.

Most people remain aware of their thoughts and surroundings. The mind may still have some chatter going on in the background — and that’s completely normal.

The goal of hypnotherapy is not to switch off the mind entirely.

The goal is to access deeper awareness while remaining conscious and engaged in the process.

Accessing the Root Cause of Emotional Patterns

Traditional counselling can be very helpful. Talking about experiences, reflecting on emotions, and gaining insight can bring valuable understanding.

But sometimes people reach a point where talking alone isn’t enough.

That’s because many emotional patterns live deeper in the mind — beneath the level of everyday awareness.

Hypnotherapy allows us to go deeper.

Instead of simply talking about problems from the surface, we can explore the underlying memories, beliefs, and emotional imprints that drive our experiences today.

When we reach the source of a pattern, something powerful happens.

Change becomes possible.

Healing Happens at the Source

In my work, I often describe this process like unlocking a door.

When we connect three key elements:

  • Awareness in the mind

  • Emotional feeling

  • Sensations in the body

…it’s like the tumblers in a lock falling into place.

Once those pieces align, the lock turns and something that may have been stuck for decades can begin to shift.

This is one of the most remarkable things about deep therapeutic work.

Something that has been present for 20, 30, or even 50 years can begin to transform as soon as we access the original emotional imprint.

That doesn’t mean every issue resolves instantly — sometimes there are layers to work through — but each shift creates a permanent change in the mind.

Supporting Emotional Healing

Hypnotherapy works best when supported by healthy practices that help the body and nervous system integrate change.

These include:

  • Movement and exercise

  • Drinking water and supporting the body’s chemistry

  • Spending time in nature

  • Spiritual practices such as meditation or reflection

When we combine psychological work, body awareness, and spiritual growth, we create powerful conditions for transformation.

The Goal of Deep Inner Work

My goal when working with people through hypnotherapy is simple:

To help them reach a place where they feel safe, confident, and free in themselves.

In fact, I often say that the aim is to help someone eventually feel like they had “the best childhood a kid ever had”, even if their early life was very difficult.

By healing the emotional imprint of the past, we can move forward with clarity, resilience, and inner peace.
