It’s Time to Step Up and Do the Inner Work
Sep 24, 2026There comes a time when we can no longer keep putting off our inner work.
Healing can be difficult. It can be painful, confronting and uncomfortable. That is why many people spend their lives carrying unresolved emotions, beliefs and experiences without ever truly addressing them.
But no matter how deep these patterns go, there is always the possibility of change.
When we find the courage to look inward, face what is difficult and receive the right support, we can begin shifting what we have carried—sometimes for most of our lives.
Taking Ownership of Your Healing
Real healing requires courage, strength and a willingness to take responsibility for what is ours.
That does not mean blaming ourselves for everything that has happened. It means recognising that while we may not have caused our wounds, we are responsible for how we respond to them and how we move forward.
When we remain focused only on what other people have done, we give away our power. Healing begins when we become willing to look at the patterns, emotions and beliefs within us that need our attention.
We all avoid this at times. We all blame, project or resist seeing something painful within ourselves. But eventually, the suffering can become too great to ignore.
You may reach a point where you say:
I don’t want to continue living like this.
I’m tired of experiencing the same pain.
Something has to change.
That moment of feeling completely fed up can become a powerful healing opportunity.
Sometimes the breakdown is the beginning of the breakthrough.
You Have to See It to Free It
Unresolved experiences do not always disappear simply because time has passed or because we have tried to forget them.
The parts of us carrying pain often need to be seen, heard, acknowledged and understood before they can begin to let go.
It is similar to having an unresolved issue with another person. Moving forward can be difficult until the problem has been named, discussed and addressed. The same is true of our inner world.
The feelings and memories we have pushed aside may continue making themselves known through recurring thoughts, emotional reactions, relationship patterns or tension within the body.
They are not necessarily trying to punish us. They may be asking for our attention.
You have to see it to free it.
You have to know it to grow through it.
You have to feel it to heal it.
There needs to be some level of conscious awareness before meaningful change can begin.
When Unresolved Issues Make More Noise
Significant unresolved experiences can create a great deal of noise in our lives.
They may appear as repetitive thinking, negative beliefs, anxiety, emotional overwhelm or patterns that continue to affect our relationships. Stress can also be experienced physically, reminding us that the body, heart and mind are deeply connected.
Medication and other forms of clinical care can be valuable parts of a person’s support. However, symptom management may sometimes need to be accompanied by deeper emotional or therapeutic work when unresolved experiences are contributing to someone’s distress.
Healing is not about forcefully getting rid of parts of ourselves. It is about meeting them with awareness, compassion and the appropriate support.
When we bring our attention to something painful or deeply charged, it can begin to change. The process may not be immediate or easy, but awareness creates the possibility of movement.
The Pressure to Change
Many people feel that the world is becoming louder, faster and more intense.
From a spiritual perspective, I believe we are moving through a period of heightened awareness and collective change. As more light is brought into our lives, the things we have avoided can become more visible.
Greater light does not automatically wash away what is unresolved. It illuminates it.
Imagine a hot-air balloon trying to rise while still tethered to the ground. As the balloon lifts, the tension in the rope increases. In the same way, the parts of us that are ready to grow may create greater tension with the patterns that continue holding us back.
We may experience this as increased discomfort, pressure or emotional pain.
But within that discomfort is an opportunity.
It may be showing us that an old way of living, thinking or responding can no longer come with us.
There Has Never Been a Better Time
There are now more resources, therapeutic approaches and supportive communities available than ever before.
You do not need to take every path or use every modality. Explore what feels appropriate for you. If one approach or practitioner is not the right fit, remain open to finding another.
When you discover something that genuinely supports your healing, stay committed to the process.
Keep doing the work.
Healing is rarely a single moment. It is an ongoing process of clearing what no longer serves us and creating space for something new.
The body may need more rest, grounding, nourishing food and time in nature. The heart may need help releasing old fear, grief or pain so there is more room for joy, peace and freedom. The mind may need support in changing limiting beliefs and repetitive thought patterns.
This is our inner spring cleaning.
We face and heal the old so we have the capacity to receive and integrate the new.

Ultimately, though, the decision to begin belongs to you.
Allow yourself to become fed up with repeating the same painful patterns. Find your courage. Ask for help when you need it. Commit to the process and take the next step.
It is time to step up.
Not because you are broken, but because greater freedom is available to you—and that freedom is your birthright.
All the best to you on your healing journey.
