Where Triggering Begins: Understanding the Roots Beneath Your Reactions

Oct 02, 2026

Have you ever experienced an emotional reaction that felt much stronger than the situation itself?

You may suddenly feel angry, upset, anxious, annoyed or deeply activated. Although the immediate event may seem small, something within you reacts as though a much greater threat or pain is present.

This is what we often call being triggered.

A trigger is not simply an overreaction. It can be an opportunity for something deeper within the body-mind to rise to the surface and receive our attention.

What Is Beneath a Trigger?

When we are triggered, the emotion we feel may not belong entirely to the present moment.

The experience can activate an unresolved memory, emotional charge or protective response that has been held within us. A current event may touch an older wound, causing the body and nervous system to respond before the conscious mind fully understands what is happening.

This can leave us wondering:

Why did that affect me so deeply?

Why am I reacting so strongly?

Where is this emotion really coming from?

Rather than judging or suppressing the reaction, we can begin approaching it with curiosity and loving attention.

What is this experience revealing?

What part of me needs to be heard, understood or supported?

Triggers as Opportunities for Healing

Being triggered can feel deeply uncomfortable, but it may also offer an opportunity for healing.

When an unresolved issue rises to the surface, we are given a chance to look at it with fresh eyes. With the right understanding and support, we can begin working with the underlying emotion, memory or protective pattern instead of remaining trapped in the reaction.

This does not mean forcing ourselves to relive painful experiences or trying to clear everything at once. It means learning how to approach what arises as safely and manageably as possible.

By understanding our triggers, regulating the nervous system and working gently with the emotions held within the body, we can begin responding to life with greater awareness and choice.

Working at the Root Level

Where Triggering Begins is the first workshop in a three-part series based on my Healing Tree model:

  • Roots: Exploring the underlying experiences and emotional patterns that shape our reactions

  • Trunk: Understanding and supporting the different parts within us that continue to carry pain

  • Branches: Moving into spiritual connection, growth and the experience of coming home to ourselves

The roots represent the deeper foundations of our emotional lives.

During this first workshop, we will explore the root causes of triggering and ask where the energy, emotion or memory behind a reaction may be coming from.

We will look at practical ways to process difficult emotions, regulate the nervous system and release energy held within the body. I will also share some of my favourite approaches for working with the experiences that activate us.

A Safe and Supportive Space

Inner work is not always easy, but it can become more manageable when we understand what is happening and have effective tools to support us.

These circles offer a small, welcoming and supportive environment in which you can learn, reflect and participate as much or as little as feels right for you.

You are welcome to attend one workshop or join us for all three parts of the Healing Tree series.

Where Triggering Begins invites you to look beneath the surface of your reactions and begin understanding what the deeper parts of you may be asking for.

With awareness, compassion and the right support, our triggers can become more than painful reactions. They can become pathways towards healing.
