I Thought I Had Already Healed This

Oct 07, 2026

Have you ever experienced something painful or familiar and thought, I thought I had already healed this?

Perhaps an old fear has resurfaced. Maybe the same relationship pattern has appeared again, or an issue with self-worth has returned after you believed you had finally worked through it.

When this happens, it can feel discouraging. You may wonder whether all the therapy, reflection and inner work you have done has made any difference.

But I want you to know that it probably has.

You have likely already healed many layers of the issue. What is appearing now may not be evidence that you have gone backwards. It may simply be another, deeper layer that is ready for your attention.

Healing Happens in Layers

Some of the challenges we carry are not small problems with quick solutions. They are significant life themes that may take years, or even a lifetime, to understand and transform.

Self-worth, relationships, belonging, safety and identity can all be deep areas of healing. They are shaped by many experiences, beliefs and emotional imprints, so it makes sense that they are rarely resolved all at once.

We work through one layer, gain new understanding and experience some relief. Later, another layer rises to the surface.

The issue may feel familiar because its underlying theme is the same, but you are not necessarily standing in the same place. You may now be meeting it with greater awareness, more support and new tools.

Progress Can Be Difficult to See

Inner work often happens gradually.

You might attend therapy, practise breathwork, explore bodywork or use another healing approach that supports you. Session by session, you chip away at the emotional charge surrounding the issue.

Because the changes are happening little by little, it can sometimes feel as though nothing is changing.

This work requires persistence and determination. Significant life challenges rarely shift quickly or easily. Even when an important breakthrough occurs, the body and mind still need time to adjust and integrate the change.

When you are focused on the work directly in front of you, it can be difficult to see how far you have already come. Sometimes you need to look back over several months, or even a year, before the progress becomes clear.

Look for the Smaller Signs of Healing

Healing does not always mean that an issue disappears completely.

Instead, ask yourself:

  • Does this pattern appear less frequently than it once did?

  • Does it feel less intense when it arises?

  • Can I recognise what is happening more quickly?

  • Am I responding differently than I did before?

  • Do I recover more quickly afterwards?

  • Can I offer myself more compassion while I move through it?

These changes matter.

Perhaps something that once overwhelmed you for several days now affects you for only a few hours. Maybe you still feel triggered, but you can pause before reacting. Perhaps you recognise the pattern while it is happening instead of understanding it much later.

These are signs of progress, even if the underlying issue has not disappeared completely.

Healing Is a Dimmer Switch

Therapy, personal growth and inner healing are more like a dimmer switch than an on-and-off switch.

We often hope to reach a point where an issue is simply gone. But healing usually involves gradually reducing its emotional charge, weight and influence.

As that charge begins to lessen, more light can enter.

We experience greater freedom, more ease and more choice in how we respond. The issue may still exist, but it no longer controls us in the same way.

This gradual change can be easy to overlook because there may not be one dramatic moment when everything feels completely resolved. Yet each layer of healing creates a little more room for us to live differently.

You Are Not Back at the Beginning

When an old issue returns, it can feel as though you are back where you started.

You are not.

You are meeting the issue as the person you are now, with everything you have learned and all the growth you have experienced along the way.

The nature of the challenge may feel the same, but the layer is different. You have already done meaningful work. Now, you are being invited to go a little deeper.

Try not to measure your healing only by whether difficult feelings still arise. Notice how you meet them, how long they remain and how much power they hold over you.

Your progress may be quieter than you expected, but that does not make it any less real.

Keep chipping away. Keep showing up for yourself. You are probably making far more progress than you realise.

Hang in there, and don’t give up.

God bless you on your healing journey.
